The initial call is for the production team to make broad decisions on who to call back. In a musical this is due to many reasons, including but not limited to vocal quality, intonation, having a grasp on the character, and dance ability. A person who comes in as a fantastic actor and dancer, may not yet be developed enough vocally to handle the rigors of a lead vocal part. At that point a decision has to be made if the person should receive a callback. If you don’t, does that mean you won’t get a callback in the future? Who knows, there are no guarantees but if you work hard and keep on training, you will have always have a better chance. I would suggest that you use the audition process to really listen to the feedback you are given and to work on areas that are weaker so that in the future you can come in and knock the production teams socks off.
The callback is where the nut’s and bolts of casting take place. It is similar to the initial call but the production team has to start being extremely selective on what is needed for specific parts. Actors may read, sing and dance for one or several parts in a callback. Don’t try to figure out what is going on… keep focused on your audition. Another cut will most likely be made and you must understand that this is the only way that the process can be done. The production team is looking for that all elusive rhythm and gel factor between all the characters. A good production is all about the casting. If the production team has done their job right the piece will come alive with the correct mix of actors, singers and dancers.
A final word of advice, don’t try to second guess why you didn’t get a part. Be excited for the actors who have and give them your support throughout the rehearsal and performance process. Remember, whether you are a lead, understudy, ensemble member, technician, usher, etc you are an important part of a successful production.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!
